defibrillators were placed throughout the country. We, as the Jewish nation, value life tremendously. The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program shows achdus, unity, and our commitment to help all Jewish people, regardless of their affiliations,”

said Frank Storch, the overseer of the Chesed Fund, to a group celebrating the inauguration of the program.

At least two people’s lives were saved as a result of having the AED devices installed in buildings throughout the area.

One person was Steven Silverman. In 2009 Silverman was at Saturday morning services in his synagogue, the Beth El Congregation when he suddenly had a sudden cardiac arrest. He was resuscitated by a trained member of his synagogue using the AED of the congregation.

“I’m more than 3 1/2 years post-sudden cardiac arrest. I’m deemed to be in good health, but my heart function is monitored regularly because of the pacemaker/defibrillator that is in my chest. I’m told that it is functioning perfectly. I’m not restricted in any way from any vigorous activities.

“I play tennis in two regular weekly doubles games. For the last two years I’ve been president of Beth El Congregation, and I’m a divorce law attorney, so I continue to be exposed to high stress levels without any cardiac side effects,” Silverman said.

Speaking about the success of the AED program Frank Storch exclaimed:

“Imagine if we didn’t do this,” said Storch. “Mr. Silverman wouldn’t be alive today.”

Celebrating ten years since the launch of the life-saving Automatic External Defibrillator Program in Baltimore, Frank Storch was on hand to address the gathering of over 120 participants.

“Thousands of lives each year would be saved if more defibrillators were placed throughout the country. We, as the Jewish nation, value life tremendously. The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program shows achdus, unity, and our commitment to help all Jewish people, regardless of their affiliations,” Frank Storch commented.

Also on hand was one of the people who most benefited from having an AED immediately available. Steven Silverman spoke about how his life was saved by the AED that had been installed in his synagogue. He thanked those that instituted the program, as well as the people who knew how to use it.

“Project Ezra and Beth El saved my life along with the people who worked on me that morning (when he had suffered an SCA- Sudden Cardiac Arrest.) It is common nature not to dwell on those events on a daily basis, life gets in the way. But the program on Monday night refocused everyone’s attention on the need to make sure that proper training of personnel and maintenance of the equipment is given the highest priority,” Mr. Silverman said.
