Guidebook Available On-line and in Hard Copy

Making gathering places for children, adults and families as safe as possible is one of the primary goals in the life of Frank Storch. That is why, immediately after the tragic events of December 2012 when 26 teachers and children were murdered in Newtown, Connecticut, Storch got to work on the easy-to-use safety booklet, Keep Your School Safe.

Frank Storch’s Keep Your School Safe is a 44-page downloadable guidebook to creating a school or other public building which is secure. The book features checklists and security protocols which guide school officials in assessing the relative safety of the school they are responsible for. If the checklists show that the school can improve, there is guidance on the changes which are needed to upgrade to a more secure environment.

With the help of the Baltimore-based Project Ezra, founded by Frank Storch, and the Chesed Fund, which Storch created with his wife Danielle Sarah, he was able to distribute 9,000 booklets to Jewish schools and community centers across the country. Storch also had an additional 1,000 pamphlets mailed to Jewish summer camps. The guidebook can also be downloaded here.

Guidebook Available On-line and in Hard Copy

The daily on-line newspaper “Hamodia” announced the mass distribution of Frank Storch’s guidebook to school safety, “Keep Your School Safe,” while offering accolades for this important effort at protecting children.

The newspaper described the guidebook as providing, “a thorough review, complete with an effective audit which incorporates a self-scoring element, to help administrators carefully evaluate school security.”

Also mentioned was the fact that “The guide has been recommended by The Secure Community Network, the National Homeland Security Initiative of the Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish organizations. It has been recommended by the Agudath Israel of America, and the Orthodox Union, as well.”

The authors explain that the power of terror lies in its ability to “make us feel unsafe, no matter what the situation or circumstance. This especially pertains to our children. Even when we should feel they are perfectly protected and safe from harm, our world has changed to such a degree that it is incumbent upon us to implement greater safety measures in their daily environment.”

The power Frank Storch’s guide has to restore our feeling of security and safety by creating a truly safe environment for our children is praiseworthy and valuable, especially in today’s world.

Praise for Keep Your School Safe

without comments

Keep Your School Safe, Frank Storch’s 44-page guidebook to improving security and safety in schools and other institutions, has been receiving praise from organizations around the country.

Elise Jarvis, associate director of law enforcement outreach and communal security for the Anti-Defamation League, which also distributes their own set of safety guidelines, endorsed the book in the following manner: “We think it’s a useful resource and a welcome complement to our materials.”

When Storch was compiling his safety guide he turned to law enforcement agencies and SWAT teams, US and Israeli security and school professionals for advice.

“They gave us a little bit of feedback,” Storch said.

The Jewish Federations of North America’s Secure Community Network, a group which consults regularly with the Department of Homeland Security said that the guidebook is

“yet another excellent tool to equip our community leaders and those of you whom are responsible for securing our children, with the knowledge to better understand the risks, threats and vulnerabilities we all face and be empowered, to effect change, and to implement a true culture of security within our schools and institutions.”

Storch Wrote Safety Guidebook “For the Love of the Jewish People”

without comments

Immediately after the horrific events which transpired at the Sandy Hook Elementary School became known to the public, Frank Storch decided he needed to do something to prevent such things from happening in the future. As an expert on security Storch began to write a handbook which could be used by just about anyone to improve safety and security in a public institution, whether it be a school, summer camp or other gathering place for the public.
Within a short time “Keep Your School Safe” was completed. Frank Storch had 10,000 copies made and distributed them to every Jewish School and summer camp in North America. The handbook is also available for free on-line.
Storch guesses that the guidebook took him hundreds of hours to write. The 44-page booklet includes checklists for school administrators to examine so they can see the quality of security and safety at their school and be guided clearly as to what concrete steps they can take to upgrade.
An example of the kinds of questions the guide asks is whether or not lockdown procedures are in place in each classroom; are all inside and outside doors designed to automatically close in a secure fashion; and are teachers expected to carry two-way radios when they take their students outside the school building?

Frank Storch explained that he wrote the booklet “just purely for the love of the Jewish people.”“We have to protect the community,” he adds.

Safety First: Frank Storch Keeping Your School Safe

without comments

Frank Storch would like everyone who works with children and other institutional venues to be as up-to-date on the best practices for safety and security. That is why he wrote Keep Your School Safe, an easy-to-use guidebook which can be downloaded for free from the internet. This handbook offers many suggestions and tips on how to bring a school or any place where people gather to the highest level of security.

Frank Storch suggests that before a school even begins to make changes its administration should undertake a safety audit. The result of the audit will be a score which will help assess the present level of security at the school and how far it needs to go to be a truly safe place.

Here is an example of the kinds of questions the audit asks about school security:

Does your school’s Crisis Management Plan include procedures for bomb search, emergency evacuation, medical emergency, and hazardous materials, as well as natural disasters such as storm, fire and earthquake?

Those conducting the audit then check boxes in which they are asked how the school ranks for that question on a scale from 1-10; whether to consider implementing the suggestion; the start date for implementation of the suggestion; who the responsibility of the implementation  was assigned to; and the date of completion of the implementation.

Here are a few ideas taken from the handbook, which can easily be downloaded and used on site.
•    Are all the school’s safety and security protocols kept up to date?
•    Is a thorough assessment of the school’s safety and security protocols periodically conducted by security professionals and/or law enforcement? When was the last time such an assessment was completed?
•    If the assessment was done by a security professional, has the school contacted local law enforcement to ensure that any suggestions implemented comply with local laws and regulations?

Keep Your School Safe On Its Way to a School Near You

without comments

During the month of May Jewish schools all over North America received a concise and

Frank Storch

School Safety is a Top Priority

easy to follow guide to school safety called, Keep Your Schools Safe. Written by Baltimore philanthropist and security expert Frank Storch the guide is a welcome addition to the resources administrators can utilize to make sure their schools are as safe as possible.

Frank Storch explains what motivated him to write and distribute the guidebook:

“It is imperative to review and tighten school safety and security measures,” asserts Mr. Storch, a security consultant, coordinator for CERT (the Community Emergency Response Team in Northern Park Heights) and an expert in security for over 35 years.

Jewish schools have a special need to be extra diligent. In addition to the terrible random violence that seems to be on the rise throughout the world and in the United States especially, Jewish institutions must be wary of violent crimes perpetrated for political or anti-Semitic reasons.

Frank Storch urges parents to get involved, too. They should encourage the administrators of their children’s schools to utilize Keep Your School Safe to make their school as safe as possible.
