The four locations in which Shoe City will be taking up residence are in the Eastpoint Mall; in Baltimore’s Erdman Shopping Center; at the King Shopping Center in Landover; and in Edgewater Village Shopping Center.

In a move predicted to bring at least 250 new jobs to the east side of Baltimore, online company will be setting up house in the National Bohemian complex in Brewers Hill.

The news is exciting a wide range of businessmen in Baltimore, as the subsidiary of AOL Inc has signed on to a 45,000 square-foot space located at 3700 O’Donnel Street. The offices are expected to open during the spring of 2015.

The new space, which is in a complex barely north of Canton Crossing, reminds one of the converted manufacturing buildings of the 20th century that were transformed into office space. Such was the situation at Tide Point,’s former home. was one of the first businesses to move into Tide Point almost 15 years ago in 2000.

According to Chris Moyer, the director of business development for the Baltimore Development Corporation, has been searching for new digs for about 10 months. The company decided to stay in Baltimore, where businessmen like Frank Storch are located, since most of the already employed workers live there.

Amazon expects to hire 1,000 workers at their new Baltimore warehouse

Amazon expects to hire 1,000 workers at their new Baltimore warehouse

Amazon, the gigant-enormous on-line retail store, hosted an information meeting close to the location of the planned 1 million-square-foot, $100 million warehouse going up now on Broening Highway. Baltimore businessmen, like Frank Storch and others, are expecting a surge in business for retailers in the vicinity of the warehouse, also called fulfillment center.

Spokeswoman for Amazon, Kelly Cheeseman, explained at the meeting that Amazon will be hiring approximately 1,000 workers about two months before the warehouse opens, which will hopefully be this coming spring.

Generally Amazon hires two tiers of workers; an entry level position which requires that the worker have a high school diploma or a GED and be at least 18 years old. The higher level position is for warehouse workers with experience and has the same minimum requirements. Although the exact salary workers can expect at the new warehouse have not been set, Amazon typically pays about 30% more than the usual retail job. They also offer other benefits like 401k matching retirement plans, a company stock arrangement, and as much as $12,000 in tuition help for employees that seek employment in a high-demand job such as nursing or information technology.

When the fulfillment center is up and running nearby retailers can expect an upsurge in business as workers begin to frequent nearby restaurants, gas stations and other services. As a whole, it looks like Amazon is good for business, coming and going.

Fighting Crime in Baltimore

without comments

In a recent article about crime in the Baltimore area, area resident Frank Storch said that he hasn’t seen a wave of incidents of this sort since 1981, when he was part of the Northwest Citizens Patrol. He explained that, after NWCP formed, there was a decrease in crime.

As Neil Schachter, the president of the NWCP said, “This is Baltimore, and unfortunately we have crime all the time. The beginning of that [wave] was surprising. When it kept on coming, that shows it was something unusual. … We’re hoping that it’s over.”

People have certainly been vigilant and keeping a watch on suspicious activity. For the full article, read here.

Frank Storch Head of Project Ezra and the Chesed Fund

Founder and head of Project Ezra and the Chesed Fund Frank Storch discussed the establishment of an Outstanding Youth Award for Exceptional Service. The award will recognize service in health and safety in the Baltimore Jewish Community. All young people from the greater Baltimore Jewish community are urged to take part. For more than ten years the Chesed Fund and Project Ezra have recognized youth in the community who have gone beyond the usual to help others, or in some cases even saved lives.

Frank Storch explains the new initiative in the following way:

“Project Ezra and the Chesed Fund are revamping the awards program. Each month there will be a new winner. Our new program will include children who have exhibited extraordinary dedication during trying circumstances. Honorees and winners will receive their awards at an end-of-the-year recognition ceremony. Their stories will be told in local media — the Baltimore Jewish Times is one of the media sponsors — and in an inspirational book of wonderful deeds.  Awardees and their families will receive a Shabbos candy platter, and their classmates will be included with a class party.”

A Strong Tree Has Deep Roots: Hannah Storch

Hannah Storch:Community Leader

As Frank Storch said at an event to celebrate 30 years of Jews for Judaism in which tribute was paid to Mrs. Hannah Storch,

“We learned the importance of community service, volunteer work and charitable contributions. We learned the importance of listening to the needs of the community and of acting to fulfill those needs.”

Frank Storch expressed gratitude at having grown up under the tutelage of such special parents who, regardless of their busy schedules the children received, “love, time and attention from our very generous mother.”

Hannah and Leo were married for 18 years. During that time they were leaders in the Baltimore Jewish community, but Leo passed away prematurely in 1972, leaving Hannah a widow. But that did not stop her from continuing the Storch tradition of helping wherever help was needed. Mrs. Storch helped create Jews for Judaism, and the Women’s Institute of Torah. Hannah also helped to establish Etz Chaim: The Center for Jewish Living and Learning. She is also an active member of her synagogue, Beth Tfiloh Congregation, where she has belonged for over 60 years.

Frank Storch Working Hard Keeping Schools Safe

Guidebook Available On-line and in Hard Copy

Making gathering places for children, adults and families as safe as possible is one of the primary goals in the life of Frank Storch. That is why, immediately after the tragic events of December 2012 when 26 teachers and children were murdered in Newtown, Connecticut, Storch got to work on the easy-to-use safety booklet, Keep Your School Safe.

Frank Storch’s Keep Your School Safe is a 44-page downloadable guidebook to creating a school or other public building which is secure. The book features checklists and security protocols which guide school officials in assessing the relative safety of the school they are responsible for. If the checklists show that the school can improve, there is guidance on the changes which are needed to upgrade to a more secure environment.

With the help of the Baltimore-based Project Ezra, founded by Frank Storch, and the Chesed Fund, which Storch created with his wife Danielle Sarah, he was able to distribute 9,000 booklets to Jewish schools and community centers across the country. Storch also had an additional 1,000 pamphlets mailed to Jewish summer camps. The guidebook can also be downloaded here.

Frank Storch Helps Increase Safety in Baltimore Public Places

without comments

It has been ten years since Project Ezra/Chesed Fund embarked on a program to install AEDs, Automated External Defibrillators, in synagogues and other public places in the Baltimore area.

“Thousands of lives each year would be saved if more

defibrillators were placed throughout the country. We, as the Jewish nation, value life tremendously. The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program shows achdus, unity, and our commitment to help all Jewish people, regardless of their affiliations,”

said Frank Storch, the overseer of the Chesed Fund, to a group celebrating the inauguration of the program.

At least two people’s lives were saved as a result of having the AED devices installed in buildings throughout the area.

One person was Steven Silverman. In 2009 Silverman was at Saturday morning services in his synagogue, the Beth El Congregation when he suddenly had a sudden cardiac arrest. He was resuscitated by a trained member of his synagogue using the AED of the congregation.

“I’m more than 3 1/2 years post-sudden cardiac arrest. I’m deemed to be in good health, but my heart function is monitored regularly because of the pacemaker/defibrillator that is in my chest. I’m told that it is functioning perfectly. I’m not restricted in any way from any vigorous activities.

“I play tennis in two regular weekly doubles games. For the last two years I’ve been president of Beth El Congregation, and I’m a divorce law attorney, so I continue to be exposed to high stress levels without any cardiac side effects,” Silverman said.

Speaking about the success of the AED program Frank Storch exclaimed:

“Imagine if we didn’t do this,” said Storch. “Mr. Silverman wouldn’t be alive today.”
